But for a more in-depth guide on what it takes to become a police officer in the state of Massachusetts, be sure to visit PrepareForThePoliceAcademy.com today!

The Future of Law Enforcement Careers In Massachusetts

One of the first things that people search for when researching how to become a police officer in Massachusetts is how much of a demand there will be for law enforcement jobs in the future. Well fortunately, in the state of Massachusetts, job growth in the law enforcement field is expected to grow nearly 7% over the next few years. That’s not really surprising because the population numbers across the state have been increasing steadily for more than 10 years.

Also, the starting salary for police officers is about $59,000 a year! Now, when you combine that with the fact that the cost of living is pretty low, you can easily see why so many people apply to become a police officer in Massachusetts. And in addition to your base salary, you can easily make more money by working overtime! That’s another perk of having a career in law enforcement, there’s always a need for extra security for special events and conventions.

The Minimum Requirements To be a Cop in MA

So as we mentioned earlier, the starting pay for police officers in Massachusetts is pretty high, and because of that, hundreds of people apply every day, so there are a few minimum requirements that applicants must meet in order to be able to attend training.

First, the applicant must be a citizen of the United States of America. Second, the applicant must be at least 21 years of age or older. Third, the applicant must not have any type of felony convictions or high-level misdemeanors on their background report, but some minor misdemeanors are accepted though. Fourth, the applicant must have a valid drivers license (can not be suspended or expired) and they must be a resident of the state of Massachusetts.

Also, all applicants must be able to pass a physical fitness exam. This exam is one of the most important parts of training because police rely on their stamina and health to perform their job duties at a high level. So if the applicant can not pass the physical exams, even if they pass all of the other exams, they won’t be able to graduate from training.

There’s also a psychological exam that’s given. This is also an important exam because at times the job of a police officer can be extremely stressful. So the examiners want to be sure that the applicant can deal with all the emotional and mental elements of being a police officer. And lastly, each applicant must have a high school diploma or at least a G.E.D.

MA Law Enforcement Academy Training

This is where things start to get tense. Police academy training consists of a no-nonsense staff of veteran officers who will do everything to push applicants to their limits. For example, it usually starts off with physical training. This consists of your standard exercises such as pushups, situps, running, vaults and walking.

The aspect of the training that makes these common exercises difficult is that they must be done in a limited amount of time. Having high stamina is important for police officers because at any given moment they may have to chase a suspect.

Next, is learning patrol functions. This consists of everything that police officers do on a routine basis such as learning how to use handcuffs properly, how to search a building and vehicle, how to search a suspect for drugs and weapons, learning the various radio communications, how to write a police report and how to deal with domestic disputes.

Applicants will also learn the various traffic and criminal codes for the state of Massachusetts. And lastly, the applicant will learn the basics of defensive driving and the proper way to use a firearm. Then once the applicant is done with training and eventually graduates, they’ll be able to then apply to become a police officer.

So now that you have an idea of what to expect when applying for a career in law enforcement, we suggest visiting www.PrepareForThePoliceAcademy.com for affordable in-depth guides on what it takes to pass all of the exams, interviews and training.
