Police Academy Guide for New York

There is no police department that is more widely respected than the New York Police Department (NYPD). There is certainly no police department that’s larger in size, and the department is responsible for some of the largest law enforcement operations in the world. It’s a big undertaking for police officers in New York City and the State of New York to protect and service the public.

Police Departments in the State of New York attract the best and the brightest. Even though there are large police departments in New York, it’s still competitive to earn a place on the force. To even apply to go to an academy in New York, you have to meet the minimum qualifications.

You have to be at least twenty-one years of age in order to be a police officer anywhere in the State of New York. You have to live in New York. In addition, a valid operator’s license is a requirement, and you must have already finished high school or gotten your GED.

Be prepared to pass tests for drugs and alcohol, and you must have a clean criminal record because the examination board checks your criminal history.

Bad vision is a problem for a lot of applicants. Without glasses, you have to have 20/100 vision. You have to be able to use corrective lenses or contacts in order to correct your vision to 20/20. If you’re colorblind, there’s probably no way you can meet the qualifications to serve in a New York police force.

If you’re complied with all of these requirements, you have to show that you meet the education requirements. You need at least some college. The general rule is sixty credit hours and your GPA has to be a 2.0 or higher.

There’s an exception if you have been in the military for at least two years and you’ve been honorably discharged. In that case, you can use the military service for half your credit hours towards the sixty-hour requirement.

There are height and weight minimums, and you have to pass physical testing to verify your fitness and physical abilities. You can’t have any serious health issue that would stand in the way of doing the job well.

Your psychological fitness is up for debate, too, so be prepared to prove that you don’t have problematic mental health issues and that you have outstanding personal character. Body piercings and tattoos may also disqualify you off the bat.

If you’re headed towards a career in a police department in the State of New York, you’re probably nervous. One way that you can calm your nerves and give yourself a leg up on the competition is by beginning your preparation ahead of time.
