Be prepared to pass tests for drugs and alcohol, and you must have a clean criminal record because the examination board checks your criminal history.
Bad vision is a problem for a lot of applicants. Without glasses, you have to have 20/100 vision. You have to be able to use corrective lenses or contacts in order to correct your vision to 20/20. If you’re colorblind, there’s probably no way you can meet the qualifications to serve in a New York police force.
If you’re complied with all of these requirements, you have to show that you meet the education requirements. You need at least some college. The general rule is sixty credit hours and your GPA has to be a 2.0 or higher.
There’s an exception if you have been in the military for at least two years and you’ve been honorably discharged. In that case, you can use the military service for half your credit hours towards the sixty-hour requirement.
There are height and weight minimums, and you have to pass physical testing to verify your fitness and physical abilities. You can’t have any serious health issue that would stand in the way of doing the job well.
Your psychological fitness is up for debate, too, so be prepared to prove that you don’t have problematic mental health issues and that you have outstanding personal character. Body piercings and tattoos may also disqualify you off the bat.
